SCIENTIFIC GLOSSARY

Android:

"An android is a robot that looks very similar to humans."

Artificial Intelligence (AI):

"Artificial intelligence is a tool whereby a computer is given the ability to think and learn like the human brain. It is already used in self-driving cars, search engines like Google, etc. and will be used extensively in the near future. Some people are worried AI will be a danger to humans once they tart learning faster than us."

Biotechnology:

"Biotechnology is a technology that uses living organisms to make useful chemicals and products. The technology is used in medicine, food science and agriculture. A simple example is the use of yeast to make beer, but the technology is also used to improve crops, make biodegradable plastics, clone animals, etc."

Carbon Fiber:

"A type of fiber that is made of carbon atoms. It is a lightweight material that is five times stronger than steel. It is used to make bike frames, car components, etc."

Clone:

"Cloning is the creation of a copy of a cell or of an entire living thing. The copy is called a clone. A clone has exactly the same DNA as the original cell or living thing."

Cryogenic Sleep:

"Cryogenic sleep means that an astronaut will be put into a very deep sleep that is comparable to hibernation. Placed in very low temperatures, the metabolism slows down so that the astronaut can survive a long time while he/she travels long distances in space. Cryogenic sleep is not yet possible but is currently being researched by NASA."

Cyborg:

"A cyborg is a being with both organic and mechanical body parts. A cyborg is a living entity with a soul, which is not the case with an android."

Dwarf Sun:

"Dwarf suns are stars that are dimmer than our Sun."

Gas planet:

Planets that are mostly made up of gases like hydrogen and helium. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are gas planets.

Goldilocks Zone:

"The Goldilocks Zone refers to a zone around a star where planets could hold life. If the planet is too far from the star, it would be too cold to hold life. If it is too close to the star, it would be too hot to hold life. Hence the "perfect temperature zone" - not too hot and not too cold!"

Hologram:

"A hologram is like a three-dimensional photographand is created with a laser that can split light."

Hover train:

"A hover train is based on magnetic levitation (Maglev). This type of train uses one set of electromagnets to repel and push the train up off the track, and another set to move the elevated train ahead. The lack of friction means the train can go very fast. The fastest Maglev trains are in Shanghai (China) and Yamanashi (Japan)."

How fast does the Earth hurtle through space?:

Earth spins at 1000 miles per hour, so even when we are sitting still, we are in fact flying through space at incredible speed.

Ion:

"An atom or group of atoms that carries a positive or negative electric charge as a result of having lost or gained one or more electrons."

Lab grown biotechnological skin or artificial skin:

"A team at the University of Tokyo has created a material that resembles human skin. It is made from  human skin cells and collagen, and could be used to cover human-like robots."

"Pneumatics uses air pressure to do work."

"A vacuum is a space with nothing in it—not even air."

"Pneumatic tubes (or capsule pipelines, also known as pneumatic tube transport or PTT) are systems that propel cylindrical containers through networks of tubes by compressed air or by partial vacuum."
